Scores and Sounds

( and the occasional video)

Original compositions and arrangements of other people's work.

With a few exceptions, the instrumental sounds are computer generated by the notation software I use.  My apologies for the less than authentic sound quality.

*One small noteā€¦ Some of these pieces were written to become part of a booklet for beginner finger style guitar. As a result, they may sound and appear somewhat simplistic in nature.

The first MP3 is a computer-generated version. The second MP3 is a "live" studio performance.  I included both versions to highlight the difference between live performance / sound and computer-generated sound. The video is my first attempt at "creating" a movie with still pictures/slideshow.

I've loved these two pieces (Jeannine and Maiden Voyage) from the first time I heard / played them.  When I decided to put them together in one arrangement, my first thought was to use the bass (Jeannine) and trombone (Maiden Voyage) as the main melodic voice.  Jeannine is by Duke Pearson and Maiden Voyage is by Herbie Hancock.

This is from my singer-songwriter days. The notation software does not allow for input of vocals.  It creates a "vocalese"  type of sound. The lyrics and melody line can be seen on the PDF file.

Friday Morning 10:00 a.m.

This piece was my first (and hopefully my only) attempt at writing "Lite / Smooth Jazz" (y'all know what I'm talking about ... 3 - 10 minutes of mindless / unthinking "improvisation" over one or two chords).  It evolved from my Friday morning "free periods" when I was music director at Kennedy Catholic High School ... circa 2001 - 2004.  During my free periods I used to practice piano in an attempt to improve my marginal skill(s) as a pianist.  This progression of Major 7th's and minor/Major 7th's was one of the results of my piano practice ... ???

*The pictures in the accompanying video may appear to be random and unrelated, but I was trying to convey the feeling of an Autumn morning in Western Pennsylvania.

**All the "multi-tracking" was done on  a Casio keyboard.

D. C. Primitiveā€¦ Circa 1995

This MP3 is a digital reproduction of a two track cassette tape recorded using two PZM microphones placed in opposite corners of a wood paneled room. As a result, the sound quality leaves a bit to be desired. Even after running the tape through AVS editing software the violin and guitar still tend to get lost in the overall mix. Having said all that, I think you will still hear Billie Holiday influences in the singer's voice.
